All You Need to Know About the Contributory Aged Parent Visa (884)

You came to visit the grandchildren, and Australia quietly became home. For parents of pension age, the Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) visa, Subclass 884, converts that visit into a lawful, bridged road to permanent residency, without leaving the country.

Inside the 884: The Onshore Aged Parent Strategy

The Subclass 884 is the onshore, aged-parent twin of the contributory temporary route:

  • Apply from inside Australia, with a bridging visa keeping you lawfully here while it processes
  • Two years of temporary residence on grant, with work rights
  • Conversion to the permanent Contributory Aged Parent (864) within the temporary period, staging the second instalment
  • The same destination as every contributory route: permanent residency, Medicare and family life without departure dates

Its defining requirement: you must be “aged” (old enough to qualify for the Australian age pension) and in Australia when you apply.

Four tests decide an 884 case:

  • Age: you must have reached Australian age-pension age at application
  • Balance of family: at least half your children permanently in Australia, or more than in any other country
  • Sponsorship: your settled Australian child sponsors you, with the Assurance of Support arriving at the permanent stage
  • Onshore status: you must be in Australia, on a visa that permits the application; “no further stay” conditions are the classic trap, and some can be waived with the right case

Health and character requirements apply as standard.

The onshore sequence:

  1. Check your platform: the visa you currently hold, its conditions and expiry date decide everything about timing
  2. Lodge the 884 onshore: a bridging visa activates when your current visa ends, keeping you in Australia lawfully
  3. Live the wait with the family: the bridging period counts as life, not limbo
  4. Convert to the permanent 864 within the two-year temporary validity, completing the second instalment and Assurance of Support

Cost: the contributory arithmetic applies: around AUD 55,400 per parent when complete, with the 884/864 pairing staging the payments: AUD 6,300 plus a second instalment of AUD 29,130 at the temporary stage, and further charges of about AUD 19,975 at permanent conversion.

Timing: parent places are capped at 8,500 across all streams and contributory queues are measured in years, but the onshore bridging arrangement means aged parents wait in Australia, with the family, rather than abroad.

The alternative: parents below pension age cannot use the 884; their onshore options run through the offshore contributory 173/143 or the 870 long-stay instead.

The lodgement window: onshore eligibility is a moving target of visa conditions and expiry dates. We map yours before anything else.

“No further stay” strategy: where condition 8503 sits on your current visa, a waiver application must succeed first; the evidence for compassionate and compelling circumstances is a craft of its own.

The family ledger: balance-of-family evidence prepared to Departmental standard, first time.

The conversion diary: the 864 lodgement, finances and Assurance of Support planned from the day the 884 is granted, never from the month it expires.
